The affect Alkali Metals have on the human body
The alkali metals are the elements that make up Group 1 of the periodic table: lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium, and francium. Sodium, and Potassium all play major roles in maintaining proper function in the body. Lithium is used to help treat with mental disorders.
Lithium- It occurs in small amounts in Earth's surface and is usually mixed with compounds of aluminum. Lithium is best known for its use as a way of controlling certain mental disorders. It is commonly seen in the form of lithium carbonate. People who suffer from a mental illness in which a person may seem highly excited, agitated, experience mood swings, or depression can often benefit from lithium carbonate treatment.
Sodium- It is the seventh most abundant element in Earth's surface and takes up 0.15% of our body's weight. Sodium is an electrolyte (carries a charge in a solution) that is vital electrical signaling in the nerves, alters cell membrane permeability, and helps regulate the amount of water in the body. If too much sodium is found in the body it can lead to high blood pressure.
